This week, we continued reading our bullying novels, The Revealers and The Misfits. Our whole group lessons focused on character development: types of characters, types of development, motivation, and point of view. The students continued working independently in their small groups reading aloud, answering comprehension questions, filling out vocabulary charts, and keeping track of the plot on their diagrams. They had their first binder check to make sure everyone is making progress toward our due date of October 6th.
In the coming week, we will wrap up the novels in preparation for next week's bullying project. We will also have our first roots quiz on Friday. Roots contracts are due on Thursday in order to participate in the review game. Can't wait for another great week :)

This week in reading we formed out literature circle groups to begin our bullying unit. Some students are reading The Revealers by Doug Wilhelm and others are reading The Misfits by James Howe. We spent the first part of class each day reviewing elements of fiction such as plot structure and then met with group members to read, answer questions, and hold discussion forums. Groups are in charge of their own reading schedules, deciding how much each night they will read in order to be finished by the October 6th due date.
Students also received their first roots list of the year as well as their Roots Contract. They will be working on small activities to help them study for their quiz on Friday, October 2nd. Next week we will continue our literature circles and be learning more about the elements of fiction, specifically characterization. We had such a great first week in reading class! It was great to meet everyone and get to play some icebreaker games! We discussed classroom rules as well as school wide rules after reading some children's books to find the lesson or moral. Overall grade 7 made a great first impression; a group of our girls even got a shout out from Ms. Shea Connor for going out of their way to be welcoming to new students :) Great job! All students brought home the syllabus and expectations to be signed off by someone at home, as well as a contact sheet to be completed. All students completed pre-assessments this week and did a great job at trying their best even though it was a lot of material! Next week we are starting with the elements of fiction by reading The Misfits and The Revealers in small groups. Students will be making schedules to decide how much to read each night within their group as well as working individually on questions and journals throughout the unit. I cannot wait to see you all on Monday! Have a relaxing weekend :) |
